In August 2007 and without having second thoughts, my son and I decided to go on a father-and-son summer vacation of a different kind. "Lets go and visit Opa Juan in Uruguay", I told my son. My father lives near Montevideo on a typical estancia enjoying his retirement. "And after one week, we shall go skiing in San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina, so you can tell your friends you went skiing during your Summer holidays". We had the most fantastic time, in Uruguay with relatives, Buenos Aires with friends and in Patagonia, skiing and visiting the most amazing accessible glaciers.

One of our 2010 eclipse tours will take you to one of the southernmost regions in South America, in Argentina’s province of Santa Cruz. On 2010 July 11th, you will be able to observe 2 min. and 45 sec. of totality shortly before sunset over the Andes. From the heights of our special lookout, we will be observing totality at just 1 degree over the world’s longest mountain range, the Andes. With a bit of luck, Mount Fitz Roy (Cerro Chaltén) will be seen shining in the distance, a few degrees Northwest from the black sun. According to Jay Anderson, the Andes Mountains act as a very effective barrier to the Pacific storms and the weather is quite promising in Southern Argentina. Although the sky might be clear overhead, the eclipse occurs on the Western horizon where cloudiness over then Andes and Chile have to be taken into account: this does lower somewhat the 55% probabilities over El Calafate. Provided we have a clear western sky down to the horizon, the views will be breathtaking: our eclipse lookout overlooks the magnificent glacial lake Lago Argentino, so you’ll have the opportunity to see the reflection of the eclipse over the Andes mountain range. With the help of refraction, the sun will appear higher than it actually is. However, for those wishing to be a 100% sure to witness the eclipse, we will provide an optional 3-hour eclipse observation flight over the Southern Pacific Ocean (see below).

Our core program concentrates on a 6-day tour (P1A-Regular) starting and ending in Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina. You will most likely come from the Northern hemisphere, i.e. Europe, North America, Asia or even countries in the Northern part of South America. Thus, you will fly from summer into winter. While in Buenos Aires, enjoy with us famous tango shows, the world’s best beef during our asado dinner, La Boca district, La Plata river, La Florida shopping and of course, the Third Total Solar Eclipse Summit, InterSoles 3. After 2 full days in Buenos Aires, we will fly you on our charter some 2,000 kilometers further south to Patagonia and stay there overnight. We will not miss visiting Lago Argentino and Perito Moreno Glacier. After lunch, we will get ready for totality. For those staying on the ground, we will take you to our special lookout, some 60-90 minutes away from El Calafate. It will be cold, but we will take care to provide for warm drinks, and a few heated tents. For those booking the optional flight, we will take you to the airport to board our Eclipse-City charter flight into totality. For those who have less time, we do offer also shorter itineraries, 4 days (P1A-Light) or even 1 day only with our special Eclipse-City Return Charter Flight Buenos Aires - El Calafate - Buenos Aires (P1A-Short). The latter program enables customers to leave El Calafate after the eclipse (Eclipse-City has the latest departing flight after the eclipse) and reach Buenos Aires on Sunday night, thus allowing international travelers to be back home on Monday July 12th.

However, if you happen to arrive on your own to El Calafate and you are not 100% certain from where to observe the eclipse, you may want to buy an eclipse observation pass from us. Due to the eclipse characteristics in the Patagonian region, there are only 1-2 locations enabling the total solar eclipse observation from a ground location. We have secured the best location for our customers exclusively.

You will be accompanied by our multilingual staff, bilingual local guides, and of course, astronomy experts from the international community. We have personally inspected most of the hotels. Our special locations and program, full board, 4 to 5-star hotels during our programs and Argentinean hospitality will make this tour, an unforgettable experience.

For those customers wishing to have a more comprehensive package, we also offer itineraries, which allow you to extend your stay and discover Argentina, such as skiing near San Carlos de Bariloche, whale watching at Valdés peninsula, visit the world’s largest waterfall at Iguazú or come on a journey to the Mendoza province and experience authentic gaucho and colonial life alongside wine tasting and leisure at the slopes of the Andean mountain range.

Welcome again to Eclipse-City

Where the Moon mates the Sun

This Patagonian itinerary is build around a 1 to 6 days tour starting and ending in Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina. You can choose between a very short program (P1A-Short), 4-day program (P1A-Light) or a 6-day regular program. You will most likely come from the Northern hemisphere, i.e. Europe, North America, Asia or even parts of the northern part of South America.

Itinerary of tours P1A
— (Regular, Light and Short) —

Thursday, July 8th 2010: Buenos Aires (start P1A-Regular tour) [D]

Arrival on your own at Buenos Aires Ezeiza international airport. You will most likely arrive in the morning hours from the northern hemisphere. Meet and greet at Ezeiza airport and transfer to your 4-star hotel (for all other passengers arriving at other times and dates, please ask about our individual pick-up service).

Afternoon: a half day visit in Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city that shows the influence of the great number of immigrants that arrived to these shores.
The tour commences at the historic Plaza de Mayo square, well known for its numerous political demonstrations. It is surrounded by the Government House, best known as the "Pink House"; the Cabildo (the old City Hall) and the Metropolitan Cathedral. The “Avenida de Mayo”, which starts in this square, is an interesting set of buildings of varied styles that reflect the diversity of its inhabitants. Wide avenues and green areas appear constantly trying to slow down the rhythm of this vertiginous city. A sample of this is the 9 de Julio Avenue, about 5 squares away from here, with its eight lanes divided by small green squares with old leafy trees and enriched by sculptures and fountains. In the middle of this avenue, in the "Plaza de la Republica", the Obelisk arises as a symbol of the city.

The visit continues towards San Telmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, which was also a center for immigrant settlers and still keeps most of its architectonic patrimony untouched: its colonial houses and cobbled streets. We take Balcarce street up to Humberto 1º, turn in Defensa and drive along Plaza Dorrego until we reach Bolivar down along Av. San Juan to Av. Paseo Colon.
Every Sunday, an antique fair is held in Plaza Dorrego. The area has also a lively night-life as there are many tango houses, restaurants and pubs.

Southwards, we reach the picturesque and colorful port neighborhood of La Boca with its famous street, "Caminito", whose architectonic characteristics reflect the culture of European citizens that arrived at these shores at the end of the 19th century, mainly Genovese sailors.

The visit continues towards the newest district of Puerto Madero; Palermo neighborhood with its elegant residences framed by wide green areas; finally reaching the district of Recoleta, the most sophisticated neighborhood in Buenos Aires. The Recoleta Cemetery, surprises the visitors for its rich architecture and the important personalities of the social and political Argentinean life, amongst whom are Eva Perón, whose remains lie there. Next to the cemetery is the church Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the Recoleta Cultural Center (previously a convent), Buenos Aires Design and the Palais de Glace.

At evening hours, transfer from the hotel to a restaurant located at Puerto Madero or Costanera, where we will have dinner.

Friday, July 9th 2010: La Independencia, InterSoles 3, Tango Argentino (P1A-Light Start) [B, L, D]

Today is Argentina’s most important public holiday. On July 9th 1816, Argentina was declared independent from Spain. All shops shall be closed and we will dedicate this day to get ready for our eclipse event attending InterSoles 3.

InterSoles is intended for eclipse enthusiasts, who would like to enjoy the total solar eclipse and also attend the summit around the eclipse event.

At the same time, InterSoles is especially intended for professional and amateur exhibitors and speakers, who wish to communicate with the professional, amateur and enthusiastic solar (eclipse) community in a professional and yet distinctive setting. InterSoles is an accompanying conference and show on all our total solar eclipse venues around the world. Previous InterSoles 1 took place in Jiayuguan (Gobi desert along China’s Silk Road) and InterSoles 2 in Shanghai.

Today, the Third International Solar Eclipse Summit, InterSoles 3 will be held in Buenos Aires. Being a part of Eclipse-City’s new "edutainment" program, InterSoles exhibitions, shows and workshops are held in the easy fashion approaching all eclipse friends – young and experienced – on the subject matter of solar eclipses, astronomy, history of eclipses, astro-photography, telescopes and much more. Like InterSoles-3, we will be giving special attention to young eclipse enthusiasts (children and teens). In July 2012, InterSoles 4 shall be held in Cairns (Australia).

We sincerely welcome and invite all eclipse friends to join InterSoles 3. Check our website on a regular basis for the updated InterSoles program. Acording to our plans, we will hold InterSoles-3 at Buenos Aires Planetarium.

After InterSoles, you may want to relax before we venture out for an authentic tango dinner show. Tango music derived from the fusion of various forms of music from hundreds of thousands of immigrants, primarily Italians, Spanish and French living in to the working-class slums in the Buenos Aires’ suburbs. Blended with African influence, the tango dance evolved from those lower-class districts of Buenos Aires to more fashionable music and dance, to what we know today as "Tango Argentino". For those interested, we will provide a one hour tango training class at our hotel, prior to departing for the show. Overnight in Buenos Aires.

For those booking P1A-Light, transfer from the airport is not included.

Saturday, July 10th 2010: the adventure begins [B, L, D]

After breakfast, we will get ready for departure. Our flight will take us 2,000 kilometers to one of the southernmost regions in South America, to Argentina’s province of Santa Cruz in Southern Patagonia. We will be flying along the Andean Mountain Range, covered by snow and ice. Calafate will be our home for a little more than 24 hours. Average July temperatures this far south range from -4 to +4°C (25 – 30°F) and during the eclipse will probably drop down to -10°C (14°F). So please do not forget your winter gear, especially winter shoes and socks, scarves and gloves, long lasting batteries, etc. for cold weather conditions. Should you have forgotten anything, make sure to do your last minute shopping by latest on July 8th.

After arrival in Calafate, we will be taken to our "Winter Resort" and enjoy overnight in this vast and remote region. We will give you last instructions for our next day eclipse observation program followed by dinner in the Calafate region.

Sunday, July 11th 2010: E-day facing the Andes (2 min. 45 sec. of totality) [B, L, D]

The eclipse will take place close to sundown. Thus, we will have all day to explore the region before proceeding to our observation locations.

After breakfast we will head towards Perito Moreno Glacier, situated within Los Glaciares National Park, 80 kilometers from El Calafate.

From the very beginning this trip will provide pleasant surprises. Departing from El Calafate, the Argentino Lake will appear on the right side of the road with its Bahía Redonda (Round Bay) that is home to an interesting and assorted bird species. The first half of the road goes through a landscape typical of the Patagonian steppe, whose characteristic species are the broom sedges (hard, thorny type of grass) and 'calafates' (bushes belonging to the barberry family which is well-known for its yellow flowers and violet fruits). From the national park entrance onwards the landscape drastically changes, the flora grows richer with species that are typical of the Andine-Patagonian Forest such as: ñires, lengas and guindos.

Perito Moreno Glacier is an imposing ice river with an area of 195 square kilometers, a length of 30 km. and a front which is 5 km wide; the frontal walls soar between 30 and 60 meters high over the lake level. In the central area of the glacier the ice reaches a depth of 250 to 350 meters. This frozen river descends from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field causing, during its slow advance, ice cracks and thunderous bursts that turned the glacier into a marvel in constant movement. A show that is impressing not only for its beauty but also for the continuous roars that are heard from its innermost recesses.

Because of its breathtaking beauty it was declared a Mankind Heritage by Unesco. A walk along the paths placed in front of its western wall will let you admire this impressive wonder of nature from different points of view.

After lunch, we will transfer you to a special look-out, just a few kilometers from El Calafate, to install the equipment to see the solar eclipse. We will provide to the group with heated tents, hot drinks, a typical snack and other services. For those booking the eclipse observation flight, you will be taken to El Calafate airport (see below).

For those travelers with very little time, we have designed a shorter journey P1A-Short: this program will leave Buenos Aires on E-Day, i.e. Sunday July 11th early in the morning with our Eclipse-City Charter Flight. Upon late morning arrival at El Calafate airport (about 2,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires), you will be taken to El Calafate and enjoy the surroundings. By noon, you will have lunch, after which you will be taken to the Eclipse-City lookout joining travelers who stayed in El Calafate the night before. After the eclipse, you will be taken back to the airport and return to Buenos Aires the same day, shortly before midnight. This tour does not include overnight nor transfers in Buenos Aires. As you will be arriving late morning in El Calafate, you will not be able to catch up the tour and visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. However, should you wish to see the Perito Moreno Glacier anyway, please ask for our VIP service. We could organize a private, and thus faster visit for you and your party. For your convenience, please be aware the Eclipse-City Charter Flight offers both an higher luggage allowance and an adjusted timetable (early arrival and late departure) to the eclipse viewers as compared to the regular commercial airlines. If you plan to overnight in Buenos Aires, before and/or after, you may choose P1A-Light or ask us for hotel and transfer services.

Eclipse Observation Charter Flight:

For those wishing to be almost 100% sure to witness the eclipse, we will provide an optional 3-hour eclipse observation flight from this region to a location over the Southern Pacific Ocean. First we will drive you to El Calafate airport, where you will board our eclipse charter to fly to the Northwest right into the totality path for an umbral shadow interception over any clouds. While over the Andean Mountain Range we will make a sightseeing loop to allow all passengers, including the ones on the shadow side, to witness first contact and the first partial phase, with Lago Argentino in the background. Should the weather be good enough on that day you should be able to see the Fitz Roy peak and later the Lautaro volcano sticking out or the many islands on the Chilean side of Patagonia. We will then fly towards our planned umbral shadow interception, which is located over the Pacific Ocean off the Chilean coast. Provided we are on time, we may accomplish another loop to provide to all passengers another view of the partial phase before reaching the start of our totality run. During the totality run the aircraft will fly at 37,000 ft (11,278 m) perpendicularly to the Sun at all times in order to optimize the viewing and the clouds will be left below us. Passengers on the eclipse side will then witness totality for nearly 3 minutes and 50 seconds, the Sun being at an elevation of 11° during totality. Passengers on the shadow side will have the opportunity to see the moving umbral shadow and the great colors around it. After the totality run the aircraft will turn back to El Calafate for an evening arrival.
Note: this is our preliminary flight route. The final route and itinerary will follow at a later time. However, you may want to reserve and secure your seat on this special flight ahead of time.

For the travelers having little time, you may choose our Return Charter Flight from Buenos Aires on July 11th and add the observation flight or ground observation pass (see below).

Soccer World Championship (FIFA 2010 in South Africa - Finals):

What a day! So many events taking place at different locations around the world: the soccer world championship will see the final round in Johannesburg (South Africa) today and finish just minutes prior to totality. The FIFA 2010 final will take place from 15:30 to 17:30 (local Johannesburg time 20:30 – 22:30). For our soccer enthusiasts, we will therefore install a TV screen in our heated tent, for those wishing to also follow the match while getting ready for totality.

After the eclipse and sundown, transfer back to Calafate. Patagonian dinner at our hotel and sharing experiences and the excitement of a full day of emotions. For those booking P1A-Short, transfer back to Buenos Aires. Arrival in Buenos Aires (Jorge Newbery Domestic Airport in downtown Buenos Aires) around midnight.

Monday, July 12th 2010: Return to Buenos Aires [B, L, D]

After a hearty breakfast we will head back to Buenos Aires, some 3 hours flight away (after arrival at the airport, end of P1A-Light).

For those booked on the P1A-Regular tour, transfer back to your hotel. Rest of the day on your own for shopping and winding down.
